HCM CITY (VNS) — President Truong Tan Sang yesterday met voters in District 1 to update them on the outcomes of the just-ended seventh session of the 13th National Assembly.
The voters, including intellects and religious leaders, shared his concern about developments in the East Sea, where China illegally placed an oil rig early last month.
They strongly condemned China's action, suggesting the Party and State leaders take steps to safeguard national sovereignty and reinforce defences.
Regarding recent violence in Binh Duong and Ha Tinh provinces, the voters said instigators should be strictly punished. They said the same should apply to individuals and agencies that failed to apply prevention measures.
Religious leaders said they agreed with policies on freedom of belief and proposed that agencies punish those who undermined the unity among religions.
The voters also suggested the Party and State take better care of the lives of fishermen and islanders. Applauding a VND16 trillion (US$761 million) support package for coast guard and fisheries surveillance forces and fishermen, they also urged NA deputies to closely supervise how it was spent.
Sharing voters' concerns, President Sang reiterated that Viet Nam's stance was to be a friend and reliable partner of the international community for peace and development, confirming that "Viet Nam does not depend on any country".
He said he wished to strengthen friendship China, but Viet Nam's national sovereignty was clearly understood and supported by countries around the world.
The State leader call on people at home and abroad to raise their sense of patriotism, saying that unity would be a decisive factor in safeguarding national sovereignty.
The same day, many Party and State leaders, including standing member of the Party Central Committee's Secretariat Le Hong Anh, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc, and Vice President Nguyen Thi Doan also met voters nationwide.
